Professional active writing tutors
Here at the Ink N Quill (INQ), we pride ourselves on having dedicated professional writers who understand the trials and tribulations faced by writers! This means we know what it takes to go from first draft to finished projects and will support you in developing groundbreaking ideas.
Self-led. At your pace. With check-ins
Our courses are self-led, with content paced over twelve weeks (or longer in some cases) and audio lectures that can be downloaded and replayed. Once or twice, depending on the module, tutors will check in on students and their progress. We aim to support every student's needs and are always available through email.
Unique intertwining of theory and practice
Students will gain a unique perspective on theory and apply these applications to your creative practice through a series of creative writing tasks. In every assessment you'll be asked to write, reflect and critically contextualise your work in a given framework.
No exams - and you get three retakes

Affordable courses
We understand that education is not cheap, and for most, higher levels of education are a privilege. With university fees going up and limited access to post-14 education, we offer affordable engagement with critical theory and developing creative practice.
We develop you into a creative, intentionally disruptive practioner
Knowledge
These assess what you know. Our courses are a critical engagement with theory (for example, craft theory, genre theory, or a specific type of framework).
These tend to be assessed through a reflective statement (or alternative assessment method to be arranged with the module leader). This helps our students develop their critical engagement, which directly feeds into creating them as critically engaged creative writers.
Practice
These objectives assess the effectiveness and implementation of your craft techniques. Effectively, these are about developing the creative writing practice of the students that we serve. This means that through developing students in various forms – poetry, critical essays, novels, short stories - students will have a wide variety of work.
Our assessments are designed so that students become experienced in the idea-to-publication pipeline and have complete creative control of their interests with guided tutor support. Do note that the following list of skills are a non-exhaustive list and these skills are contingent on what students focus on form-wise. A student who mostly writes non-fiction will develop a different set of skills than fiction writers, for example.
Three Types of courses to suit you
Our “Beginning Writer” modules
Green represents growth, and that's what you'll experience as you work through these six modules from Ink N Quill. If you want an extra challenge, you can try a seventh. This course is designed for writers who are just starting out or building their skills step by step. It's set at level 4, making it a good fit for those beginning both theory and practical work. By the end of these modules, you'll have explored different texts and forms, and you'll understand the basics of critical theory. This foundation will help you as you continue to develop your creative writing and critical thinking together.
Our “Gaining Experience” modules
Orange is getting hotter and more intense. Developing what you understood in the beginning modules, you will become a more versatile writer when you undertake these modules, from novel writing to professional teaching and publication experience. You will not only become a more versatile writer, but a more versatile practitioner, with an understanding of how creative writing is taught and published.
Our “Experienced Writer” modules
Red is for royalty and critical sophistication, and happens to be the most intensive critically-engaged module we offer. You will reach new frontiers of critical engagement and develop your own work through devising and writing your own project, either a novel or an in-depth creative writing portfolio with a critical awareness component.
