Writing from a Neurodiverse perspective

CW41b

One of the first modules available, "Writing from a Neurodiverse perspective,"  welcomes students into understanding their own neurodiverse mind within the writing process, taking a strengths-based, inclusive approach. Through this, you will develop a complex understanding of your brain and how to effectively design the drafting, writing and editing processes, to ensure long-term career viability and develop into a strong self-advocate. The module uniquely combines the practical emphasis on creating and the theoretical focus on processes. We will introduce you to theories of editing, productivity organisers that work with your mind, and how to advocate for yourself effectively in this fast-moving industry. We will also consider how you can use the tools you've gained to create your own piece of socially-engaged creative writing and use your unique brain as an advantage rather than a deficit.

Through a series of self-led explainer audio lectures and creative tasks, the course will introduce you to the critical theory and principles behind designing a sensory-friendly space and adapting routines to your needs. You will also embed and contextualise your crucial work within the adaptations framework, and start your journey to becoming a socially-engaged, intentionally disruptive artistic practitioner who can effectively advocate for their needs professionally.

You will gain theoretical and practical underpinnings to ensure your creative development alongside understanding the underpinning theories and career progression, and write your own piece which centres the neurodiverse experience, through a series of writing activities and prompts to help get you used to practising with these new ways of working with your mind instead of against it.

Through this course, you shall successfully develop a sound understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and practical considerations of creative writing with a neurodiverse mind. More important than just the theory, though, is how you can use these practically to understand and become an active contributor to the exciting, disruptive field of creative writing with your unique outlook and skills.
