Outlining for Effective Creative Writing

CW411a

This module welcomes new creative writers who may need help structuring their outline, developing their ideas, or voice. Here, the module's central concern is how to outline, led by active practitioners who understand your pitfalls and struggles during the creative writing process. The module is unique in its blend of outlining theory and context-dependent outlining, where you will learn how to outline the traditional short story for curricula.

We will introduce you to effective outline practices across forms and various approaches to dynamicise your outlining and develop your creative intuition. After the theory, we will consider how to use the diverse set of outlining tools you've gained to create your own creative outlining.

Through a series of self-led explainer audio lectures and creative tasks, the course shall do two things: introduce you to the critical theory of outlining to embed and contextualise your critical work within, and start your journey to becoming a socially-engaged, intentionally disruptive artistic practitioner who can pen ideas quickly, precisely and can spend less time outlining, and more time writing your excellent masterpiece.

You will gain theoretical and practical underpinnings to ensure your creative development alongside an understanding of the theory to become a dynamic, evidence-informed practitioner.

You will also have the opportunity to write your own outline for various forms - from the radio play to the curriculum - through a series of writing activities and prompts to help get you used to experimenting with key story structures and how to "stage" a story.

Through this course, you shall successfully develop a sound understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and practical considerations of effective outlining practice and real-world development. More crucial than just the theory, though, is how you can use these practically to understand and become an active contributor to the exciting, disruptive field of creative writing, through creating hard-hitting pieces through careful, dynamic planning.
